Your SPEX sight test will be performed by a qualified optician who will explain in plain english the various stages of the examination.
The Optometrist will examine the health of your eyes, look for any indications of eye disease and identify any defects in your vision.

  1) Initially the optician will check your history and ask if you have any specific problems or requirements. He will look at your eyes using an opthalmoscope to detect any abnormalities of the eye.

  2) If your sight needs correction then the basic type of correction has to be ascertained. You will put on a special type of spectacles and be asked to look at the familiar wall chart. By swapping spectacle lenses till the letters become sharp, the exact degree of correction is calculated. At the same time you will take a reading test using a hand held reading chart - this will check if you need any additional correction for reading.

  3) If you are over 40 or have a history of glaucoma (too much pressure within the eye), the optician will test for this using a sophisticated device which shoots a small jet of air at the surface of your eye.

  4) You will then be asked to look at red and green panels containing black circles. These are used to check how well the eye muscles are working to keep your eyesight balanced. If you need to be checked for colour blindness you will look at a series of coloured dot patterns containing numbers - anyone with colour blindness will have difficulty seeing the numbers within the patterns.

  5) If you drive then you will need to read a representation of a car number plate to check if your eyesight falls within driving requirements.
There are several other tests and procedures that you may experience as part of your eye examination - always ask the optometrist if you would like to know more about it.

Finally you will receive a prescription containing all the information needed to produce the necessary correction.
