Spex Opticians help to raise £50,000 for Lancashire

Hundreds of shoppers stared in total disbelief when Dame Shirley Bassey suddenly appeared in Clitheroe! Looking every inch the glamorous superstar she is, the diva stopped traffic and turned heads as she arrived to make a glittering personal appearance at SPEX Opticians in New Market Street.

It’s hardly surprising that Shirley Bassey look-a-like Maxine Barrie won a series of ITV’s Stars In Their Eyes thanks to her uncanny ability to look and sound just like her. The Bassey look-a-like had been invited to SPEX Opticians to try on some designer eyewear.

“People couldn’t believe their eyes. She looked and sounded unbelievable, just like the real thing,” said a spokesman for SPEX Opticians. “I think people were a bit star-struck!”

Spex Opticians help to raise £50,000 for Lancashire

Spex Opticians help to raise £50,000 for Lancashire! The owner of SPEX Opticians says he’s delighted that a charity ball he helped to organise has raised £50,000 for local charities. Managing director Kevin Horkin described The Community Foundation Ball, which attracted around 400 guests, as a “glittering success.”

The event was held at the Gibbon Bridge Hotel, Chipping. Fabulous auction prizes donated by companies and individuals included a luxury villa holiday in Florida, corrective laser eye surgery and a top chef to cook a dinner party in your own home.

Kevin Horkin said: “The glittering event was a huge success in spite of the fact that we are in a time of recession and times are hard. It was a night for having fun but we never lost sight of the fact that the ball had been organised to raise as much money as possible for charity.
